Never use saliva to moisten your lips. Saliva has a compound that actually dries lips and make the chapping worse.
There is no other way but to use lip products. Body Shop does a very good lip balm, so does the Australian company, The Natural Source.
The cheapest lip salve is petroleum jelly eg Vaseline, but it sure doesn't taste good.
Just remember, resist using your own saliva to wet your lips!
